Balancing economic viability, environmental sustainability & social benefits…
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council Corporate Plan identifies five main priority areas to address the development of the local economic and business environment:
1. A broad economic base
2. Support for local businesses
3. Infrastructure for economic growth
4. A sustainable tourism industry
5. A strong rural sector
The retention of productive capacity is vital to the future sustainability of our region as well as contributing to the lifestyle and appearance of the region. The Compass Farm project provides very substantial benefits in all five areas identified above. Its’ very model is a synergy of social responsibility and sound business practice. The Farm reflects diversity and harmony within interrelated sectors including education and training, sustainable rural development, tourism, retail and hospitality.
The Compass Farm (48 Christensens Rd, Palmwoods) was established in 2010 by the Compass Institute, a Sunshine Coast based charity, as a place where people with disabilities could gain diverse work experience, learn and enjoy paid employment when they had completed their secondary education. It is an extension of the Compass Education & Training service formed in 2003 to assist people with disabilities to take up valued roles in their community. Many of the young people will undertake relevant certificate level courses in areas like horticulture, retail and hospitality to support their interests through the Institute’s RTO arm.
When you visit the Compass Farm you will often be greeted & assisted by people with an intellectual and/or physical disability… and they will be very glad to see you. The Compass Farm provides bio-dynamic and organic produce; vegetable, herb, flowers and tree seedlings; farm fresh eggs, honey and a range of value added items made from produce on the farm including wooden craft items, honey and herbal soaps / bath products. You will also soon be able to book a tour where you will see the young people at work in the Nursery, Market gardens, Mixed orchards, Animal husbandry area, Workshops and Stall. Please tell your friends & visit as often as you like.
