Sometimes we want to know we have made a difference – not just a donation. We also want to feel that we are helping people who help themselves. Compass worked in the local community providing vital services for 11 years without one cent of government funding or independent sponsorship. We made an art form of being self reliant. We have also learned that to be even more effective we need to work with the support of others. Based on this here at Compass we really do appreciate your support very much.
The little things…
The support you provide really does go towards making the dreams of young people with disabilities come true, often in some surprisingly simple ways. For example…
Dennis needed some extra support hours to help him make the transition into ‘real’ part-time employment with a local company – dream come true!
Luke needed some art resources to help him continue his stunning rise to ‘stardom’ as an emerging artist with a disability – dream come true!
Jenna needed some specialist assistance with ‘signing’ so she could communicate with her family, friends and support staff – dream come true!
The big things…
There are also some very ‘big ticket’ items that are part of the dream. Compass has recently purchased a 20 acre property that we are turning into Compass Farm – a place for young people with disabilities to learn about horticulture, animal husbandry, nursery work. This has been on our drawing board for three years and acquiring the property is only the beginning. We have a building fund that will require some serious CPR to get it back to life and keep the repayments up! Then there are are tractor, mowers, slasher and other farm equipment to purchase, tools and safety clothing, nursery equipment and on the list goes.
Compass is also focused on assisting families of people with disabilities to transition to sustainable and dignified living solutions in a place that they can really call home. There are a number of models that have been explored however bringing those to fruition will require a great deal of enthusiasm and financial support.
