Gardening Australia Clip

Glen recorded this Gardening Australia clip about Welby Garden Centre in NSW who provide vocational training and supported employment to people with disabilities in a nursery setting. It’s great to see other organisations providing these types of opportunities and engaging people with disabilities in community services.

A big thanks to Glen for the clip.

Farm Team helps set up Nambour Showgrounds

photo 2We have had three great days at the Nambour showgrounds with lots of hard work and a bit of fun thrown in. It was a wonderful opportunity to give much needed help and support back into another community organisation. The feedback from everyone involved in setting up the show was amazing and we have been asked to help out next year.

Aiki Abilities Classes

Aiki Abilities classGood afternoon everyone. As you are aware, we run Aikido classes for the trainees every Monday as part of their Compass Education and Training program. As more and more of our trainees wanted to do extra Aikido practice we have expanded these classes to offer a Thursday afternoon session 4:30pm – 5:30pm as well (outside of Compass hours). These classes are called Aiki Abilities and are held in the Dojo above the Palmwoods Centre. These Aiki Abilities classes also give Farm trainees a chance to practice Aikido once again (as they generally don’t get the time to when they are working at the Farm).

The classes are well structured and we also offer extra supervision for Compass trainees during the time after Compass finishes (3.30pm) until the class starts (4.30pm) on Thursdays. Once the trainees finish at Compass for the day, they come over to the office and are fully supervised until the class begins. They usually have afternoon tea, read and chat with each other in this time.

We are encouraging trainees to come along and watch or try out these high quality classes (first class is free). Of course parents and carers are welcome to come and watch too, and even join in!

We have recently started offering these classes to the public after having received extremely positive feedback from Compass trainees and parents who attend and watch the classes so please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think may be interested or could benefit from these classes.

To watch a short video demonstrating what the classes offer,  click this link http://www.kenshin.com.au/kenshinkan-aikido/aiki-abilities/. As you can see, it truly is a fun and rewarding experience, and a great way to keep fit and socialise.

Taught by several accredited and qualified instructors who are all experienced in the disabilities field, the Aiki Abilities classes help develop whole body coordination, concentration, cooperation, self-confidence and socialisation skills. With two payment options available; $8 per class or $70 per term (based on the Compass Education and Training calendar – excluding public holidays) these classes really are value for money.

We would love to have your sons and daughters attend these classes. Bookings are essential so if you are interested, please phone (07) 5457 3716 or email info@kenshin.com.au.

Great Gatsby Fundraiser

DSC00469On Thursday the 30th of May, the Caloundra Lioness Club held a glittering fundraising event for Compass at the Caloundra Cinema where we celebrated the decadence of ‘The Great Gatsby’ era. Dress codes included flamboyant feathers for the ladies and bright braces for the men.  A really magic night. All proceeds from the evening will go to Compass. Thank you Lionesses for your generous support!

Thank you Heritage Bank!

stairsThe construction of stairs and a ramp leading from the back of the Palmwoods Centre is now complete! Heritage Bank kindly donated the money for this construction through their Community Grants program and the outstanding work was completed by first class builder Anthony McDonough.

We are extremely grateful for Heritage Bank’s generosity and all of Anthony McDonough’s hard work, it has certainly paid off! (click on image to enlarge).

Heritage Showbags

pic ECTrainees from Caloundra and Palmwoods have been busy this week helping Heritage Bank fill their showbags for the upcoming Nambour Show – well done everyone! All proceeds from the sale of these showbags will go to Compass. Don’t forget to pick yours up next Friday at the Nambour Show :)

Environmental Week

20130606_101102This week has been a power week on sustainability and we have been learning how to look after our world.  Today at the Palmwoods Centre we are making pots out of newspaper and planting lettuce.  The newspaper will break down when it is planted into the ground.

Ladies Oaks Day Success

20130531_105819Ladies Oaks Day 2013 at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club was a huge success! Luckily the sun was shining and everyone involved had a ball.

Special thanks to all the Compass staff, trainees and family members who came and leant a hand on the day, we really appreciate it! Also, great job to the trainees who helped escort the bachelors up on stage.
