Mulch Donation

Recently the Compass Institute has received a huge donation from Energex. Eastern Tree Services are vegetation management specialists contracted to Energex and had 10 overloaded truckloads of mulch delivered to the farm the other day out of pure generosity.

We are all extremely grateful for the benevolent work done by Andrew McApee and his team, who were courteous and supportive.

The mulch will be well used for fixing that little weed problem, and improving the nutrition of plants in the farm.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard announces NDIS rollout

A NATIONAL Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will start in Australia from July 2013 in up to four locations across the country.

At an NDIS rally in Sydney, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that from mid 2013, about 10,000 people with significant and permanent disabilities would start to receive support.

By July 2014, that figure would rise to 20,000 people.

“The timeframe announced today means the first stage of an NDIS will be delivered a full year ahead of the timetable set out by the Productivity Commission,” Ms Gillard and Disability Reform Minister Jenny Macklin announced.

“For the first time in Australia’s history people with significant and permanent disability will receive lifetime care and support, regardless of how they acquired their disability.”

The government will fund its share of the cost of the initial stage of the NDIS in next week’s budget.

“A new National Disability Transition Agency, funded by the Australian Government, will be established to run the delivery of care and support to people with disability, their families and carers in the select locations,” the PM and Ms Macklin said.

“We want Australians with disability to start benefiting from this fundamental reform as quickly as possible.”

The initial launch locations will be determined in consultation with the states and territories – who have all agreed their shared responsibility for the fundamental reform of disability care and support.

“The work done at these launch locations will give the Government vital information on how best to progress the national roll-out,” the PM said.

“An NDIS will give all Australians with a significant disability the peace of mind to know that their care and support needs will be addressed, no matter where they live or how they acquired their disability.”

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell, who also attended the rally among around 2,000 people at Sydney Olympic Park, said bipartisanship was needed at a federal level no matter which party won the next election.

“Delivering the national disability insurance scheme should be above politics,” Mr O’Farrell told the gathering, adding that NSW was making itself NDIS-ready.

Sydney Rugby league coach Ricky Stuart, who has a teenage daughter with autism, said it was time politicians took action.

“Our disabled resources, our disabled children are pushed – they’re pushed behind,” he told the gathering.

“We can’t have that. We need to put them to the forefront and make them more important than me and you and everybody else. They need to be number one.”

Welcome to Our New Farm Manager

We would like to warmly welcome our new Farm Manager Chris who has just moved down from Bundaberg. Chris has moved down without his partner to really focus on the farm and the Compass direction although he is a family man his children are currently overseas. He talks proudly of both of his children’s achievements and looks forward to seeing them again. Chris is taking the holiday break to get acquainted with the farm before settling in with the trainee’s and planting further crops in term 2. Chris is keen to see the farm progress and produce a booming crop of various fruits and vegetables this year. With a background in a large array of horticulture including hydroponic flowers, chilli’s, most small crops and his latest venture kiwi fruit he has eager to get planning
and planting. We all look forward to getting to know Chris further.

Kurek Ashley Success Seminar & Firewalk

The Compass Institute was very privileged to host Kurek Ashley, motivational speaker and bestselling author on Saturday 24th March at its Caloundra Centre. Kurek ran an amazing Success Seminar & Firewalk for Compass families, staff and the general community. The Firewalk was a  high-energy activity designed to overcome fears and turn them into your most powerful allies. The metaphor behind the    Firewalk is what you believed was impossible – really isn’t. …so what else in your life that you thought was impossible has been holding you back from success…

Kurek decided to run this Success Seminar and Firewalk for a fraction of its original price so that people who may not regularly get access to world class coaching are given the opportunity. Kurek has also very generously donated all funds raised to Compass.

The night ended up raising around $3,600 for Compass! We have heard nothing but positive feedback about both the seminar and Firewalk.

A big thank you to Kurek and his wonderful assistants for their generosity and for such an empowering and inspiring afternoon!

The Compass Race Night

Everyone really had a great night at the Compass Coast Life Homes inaugural Race Night on the 10th of February. We certainly enjoyed having them along for the ride J and wanted to take this opportunity to thank the participants once more for their generous support of the young people at Compass.

In particular of course the night would not have been possible without our major sponsor, Coast Life Homes. Thank you to Russel, Jane and Bianca. Thank you also to CSR, Monier PGH, Met Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club, Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club and Beerwah Post Office. Darcy Tyrell & Dan Dwyer in particular did a great job in ensuring we had a good crowd on the night…. 135 people was a great effort for our first event there. Thanks also to Nick Humphreys and the Board of the Sunshine Coast Turf Club for the terrific venue and all the organisation behind the scenes.

Thanks to their generous support we raised a grand total of $7,113 – every cent of which will go towards much needed renovations at the Compass Caloundra centre. Watch this space for the before and after photos.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the next Race Night scheduled for later this year. What a great way to head into the Christmas season that will be.
